Stump Grinding in Marysville & Snohomish County
Get Rid of That Stump — Reclaim Your Yard
That stump in your yard isn’t just an eyesore. It’s a tripping hazard, a lawn mower obstacle, a home for carpenter ants, and wasted space. Every season it sits there, it gets a little more annoying.
We grind stumps down to 6-12 inches below grade — deep enough to cover with soil and plant grass, lay gravel, or build over. The stump is gone, the roots decay naturally underground, and you get your yard back.
How Stump Grinding Works
It’s simpler than most people think:
1. We bring the grinder to your stump — we have equipment ranging from walk-behind grinders for tight backyard access to large self-propelled machines for big stumps and open areas.
2. We grind it down — the machine uses a rotating carbide-tipped wheel to chew through the stump, turning it into mulch-like chips. We go 6-12 inches below grade (deeper on request).
3. We clean up — the wood chips from grinding can be used to fill the hole and spread as mulch in your beds, or we haul them away. Your call.
4. You’re done — fill with topsoil, plant grass seed, and in a few months you won’t even know there was a tree there.
The whole process usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours per stump, depending on size. Most stump grinding jobs are done in a single visit.
What Does Stump Grinding Cost?
Stump grinding is one of the most affordable tree services:
- Small stumps (under 12″ diameter): $100–$200
- Medium stumps (12–24″ diameter): $200–$400
- Large stumps (24–36″ diameter): $400–$600
- Very large stumps (36″+): $600+
- Multiple stump discount — the more stumps, the lower the per-stump price
If you’re having trees removed, add stump grinding at the same time and save on the mobilization cost. We’re already there with the equipment.
Why Not Just Leave the Stump?
People ask us this all the time. Here’s why stumps should go:
- Pest magnet — Decaying stumps attract carpenter ants, termites, beetles, and other wood-boring insects. Those insects eventually look for other wood to eat — like your house.
- Tripping hazard — Especially as grass grows around them and they become hidden.
- Lawn care nightmare — Try mowing around a stump every week for the next 10 years.
- They don’t go away — A stump can take 10-20 years to fully decay on its own. In our wet climate, it’ll be a soggy, fungus-covered mess the whole time.
- Property value — Stumps make a yard look neglected. If you’re selling, they’re a negative.
- Future projects — Want to build a patio, put up a fence, or extend your driveway? That stump is in the way.
Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal — What’s the Difference?
Stump grinding removes the visible stump and grinds several inches below grade. The root system stays in the ground and decays naturally over time. This is what 95% of customers need.
Full stump removal means digging out the entire root ball with an excavator. This is only necessary when you’re building a foundation or doing excavation work on that exact spot. It’s significantly more expensive, tears up more of your yard, and is overkill for most situations.
We recommend grinding for nearly every residential job. It’s faster, cheaper, less disruptive, and the results are the same — a flat, usable surface.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the roots keep growing?
No. Once the stump is ground, the tree is dead. The remaining roots underground will slowly decay over the next few years. They won’t damage anything.
Can you grind a stump in a tight space?
Usually yes. We have compact grinders that fit through standard gates (36″ wide). If access is really tight, let us know during the estimate and we’ll figure out a solution.
What about the wood chips?
You get a pile of wood chips roughly 4-5 times the size of the stump. Most people use them as mulch or to fill the hole. We can haul them away if you prefer.
How soon can I plant grass or build over the spot?
You can fill with topsoil and seed immediately after grinding. For building (patios, structures), wait for any remaining root material to settle — usually a few months.
I have a stump from years ago — can you still grind it?
Absolutely. Old stumps are actually easier to grind because the wood has softened. We grind stumps of any age.
